Not really a monohull issue - more like how not to run a race >> setting a course that passes thru that narrow, shallow cut. Or possibly the racers were taking a short cut to attempt to gain an advantage over those more wise...... I know I wouldn't sail my boat thru there under spinnaker if at all.

I stand corrected.

My Swedish isn't so good. What happened? (Well, I know what happened, but why?)

Apparently they wanted to demonstarte a crash stop in front of an audience on the Göta canal, which is only around 30 metres wide and 3 metres deep here. The manouver created some weird waves, the driver lost control and the waves plonked the boat on the hard.

Luckily it stayed on the edge and did'nt continue onto the parked cars below.

No one was hurt, but the crew were a bit shaken.

The boat will be pulled back into the canal, and has seemingly not sustained any damage.

This is a short form, but covers the main points.

The boat belongs to the Marine Home Guard in Sweden.

Good question ... with no official answer..for a long time I suppose.

It all takes place in "Göta Kanal" a narrow canal which normaly has a 5 kts speed limit.

The navy is showing off at a local event.
Whoever is responsible for this shows lack of knowledge and bad judgment.
This should really be a " no wake zone". Not a place to show off the capacity of a vessel capable of 40 kts.
Observers on place describes how the vessel powered to the en of a reach, turned around and powered up, but the bow did not seem to lift and it started to "wobble" from side to side instead of going straight. You can observe this on the video as well

I think that the following piece from an old Aussie textbook on power boat /fishing vessels handling probably comes pretty close.

In a confined channel such as a deep water cut through very shallow water, a canal or suchlike, a ship tends to hold herself automatically in the center.
As she veers towards the bank the water pressure builds up between the hull and the bank and pushes her away from the bank.

As a result, you need very little helm in such a channel. However, if you veer in to sharply, the pressure could push you back so violently that you are unable to control the swing and could easily finish up swinging right across the channel.

maybe the Swedish one's sort of an amphibious design???
