My wife and I are looking at buying a used 1000 or 1000XL and want to know what folks think of there Seawinds. About 8 years ago we test sailed a 1000 and my wife got hooked. We are looking at a part time liveaboard and sail in the Salish Sea by Seattle WA mostly. What modfications do most folks add ? My wife wants to know about adding washer/dryer? We think the king size bed in the salon is our choice of Master state room, how does it work for others? The 1000 we sailed had added glass doors and windows instead of the canvas salon enclosure and I think we would do that to be able to handle the Pacific NW winters, any thoughts ? I was looking on line at used Seawind 1000's and came across a used boat that had added the sugar scoop and also upgraded to 25 hp 4 cycle outboards is this a good thing?

Go to Joe Suidzinskis excellent web site on a seawind 1000 (http://katiekat.net)

I wouldnt

Not really necessary - see Joe's web site as mentioned for his story on trip to Alaska and the canvas enclosure. Also see my earlier posts in the seawind 1000xl thread - particularly around Page 4 of the sewind 1000xl area, see andrews story and some photos of different enclosures on this page. I wouldnt unless you really need the extra grunt, even then I would only put one 25 on.

I really strongly recommend reading Joes website and emailing him directly - it has a lot of info.

But keep the questions coming, and I/we will try to answer.

If the Seawind your'e looking at with the 25hp upgrade is in Stuart Fl. we looked at it and it has the 9.9 Yamaha's. Must have been a misunderstanding between the broker and owner.

My wife and I think we have found the ideal performance boat for us with a KING size bed with a 360 view. We like the beds in the hulls for guests so they won't stay long banging there heads setting up in bed and not enough room for an active couple's homework.

As for adding double sliding glass doors with a total of 4 ft opening and side windows. Right now in our favirite harbor in the SanJuan Islands there is about half inch of ice floating on the salt water and it can be as cold minis 10 to -20 C with 35 mph breezes and last year they had a total of 24 inches of snow south in Seattle. Other than doors we will need a diesel fuel furnice to heat each hull when at anchorage or out sailing simular to what we have now on our monohull.

Question: Does each hull have 3 sepirate bulkheads??? Can a 1000 stand having a 2 ft hole in one of the water tight bulkheads and not sink???
One of our friends just finished the Baha HaHa ralley from California to Mex's Baha in his uncle's 1000XL where a big race sailing J boat got hit at night by a whale and tore a 2 ft hole with the rudder off and sank it completely in 5 min. Luckly the crew got resqued in there life raft in the morning by the US coast guard.
