Quinta Do Lorde – Madeira
Dec 2009.
Pricing
Catamarans are charged by the square meter. Charges are high compared to the Canaries at €0.51/msq/day based on a stay of under a week (this includes a 20% discount if you say you are a member of a sailing organisation). Tulliana’s daily rate would have been €74 Euro per day without the discount. All the pontoons are the fingered variety without lazy lines and water and electricity is included.
Navigation
Simple entrance to starboard (well disguised with rocks) but quite narrow so keep an eye out for other traffic coming out before trying to enter. We called in on VHF 09 (although not answered) a Marinero met us in a RIB and advised us which berth to use. They will help with mooring and will take your lines. During our stay the winds were quite low but the marina is subject to a fair bit of swell at certain states of tide. I would recommend the use of bungy or sprung type mooring lines if staying here for any length of time.
Security
There are locked gates on the pontoons but they are not in use and the few people around seem to come and go without any problem. You occasionally see some security staff but the marina is mainly quiet and in my opinion doesn’t pose any form of security threat. It felt perfectly safe to walk around at night and is well lit.
Area
Quinta Do Lorde Marina was opened in 2003 as the first part of a 5 star hotel and apartment complex. During our visit (6 years later) work is still progressing although I would predict the majority of works being completed by late 2010. Having seen the finished model of the complex it is going to be a really nice place but currently there is nothing here apart from a few offices, a bar/restaurant, the marina office and a very large building site. We were advised by the marina that there has been a large uptake of the apartments in the complex and only a few remain unsold so it will be a bit different from the ghost town it is now. One of the marinas biggest assets is Catia who runs the marina office who can’t do enough for you from arranging hire cars to advising the best places to visit during your stay. We hired a car for a couple of days and saw a bit of the island which I must say was absolutely beautiful and the people all very friendly. The main airport at Funchal is only 10 kilometres away and a 15 minute ride by taxi.
Provisioning
As stated above there is currently nothing at the marina itself but they do run a free shuttle to a supermarket twice daily. Fresh bread is available from the Bar/Cafe each morning which is very nice. The prices are reasonable and everything is readily available.
Services
All of the skills and services are available on the island but not at the actual marina. Catia can put you in touch with these people but I cannot advise on the pricing or experience of the workmen.
General
The marina is very clean with a good community spirit and very friendly. Although it is expensive compared to the Canaries we would like to return some day as we were very impressed with the island itself. Free Wi-Fi is available in the marina.
