The seven islands constituting the Aeolian Islands just north of Sicily are a lovely cruising ground with safe harbours and anchorages never far away. The two active vulcanoes on Stromboli and Vulcano add some excitement / interest. Winds in summer and autumn are on the low side. Anchoring will always be quite inshore as the islands are of vulcanic origin and steep to quickly - the authorities accept this.

For us sailors an important bolting hole can be the island of Vulcano as it has two opposing horse shoe shaped bays facing west and east which provides us perfect shelter in nearly all wind scenarios. They are just 2.7M apart.

Not sure about this one. Last summer / autumn we had more than just one little blow, often 30 or 40 kn for many hours, plus massive thunderstorms. One morning started with solid 55kn and peak gusts 63kn.

And the bay west of Vulcano can be quite a trap in heavy thunderstorm conditions, some areas have some strange sand patches that give only poor holding.
