View Full Version : Noise/Comfort Level on the 5 cabin layout

Ok here is a question for anyone that has sailed on the 5 cabin layout, can you tell me the diference in noise level (or comfort) in any of the 5 cabins?
I am looking at converting 2 into dive/storage areas and am tempted to take the aft 2 but several people have said they are the nicest/quietest so I am wondering, most of the time will be spent at anchor (assume 1 week anchor for every 1-2 days passage)

Aft cabins are noisiest when engines are running. Whichever aft cabin has the generator is noisiest if the generator is running. But, when sailing, aft cabins are quietest and most comfortable.
So if I was going to convert two cabins it'd be the one with the generator and probably the one in the centre pod as it has limited head room.

Whilst the aft cabin is quietest when sailing from the point of water slapping against the hull, they are noisier than the forward or midship ones as the active sailing crew will be positioned in the cockpit, i.e. above you, and has to move about, talks, listens to radio...
Another thing to consider is the amount of weight you want to position in these cabins and the effect on the boat's trim. Diving equipment tends to be quite heavy.

Thanks for the feedback so far, so the 2 front side cabins may make sense as the normal cabins and the front center as a spare, while converting the rear, I agree I need to balance the weight but if I assume a max of 6 people then I should be able to load up 400KG without any overall effect ofcourse I need to load 2000KG but that is another issue.

Definitely not. You really need one of the stern cabins for sleeping at night on passage. There'll be little or no on deck activity to make a noise. You reef down before night fall and if there is any change in conditions that require activity you, as Skipper, WANT to hear it.
Believe me, you will not want to sleep in the bow cabins in any cat when going to windward.

Soo confused, does anyone have any noise level info on the difference, but there is good news I can be asymmetric and grab one aft and one front for the conversion, it's just that loading the afts is easier so one has to go for dive gear.

It is not just noise level... You can become airborne in the bow cabins going to windward. Again, this is in any cat not just Privileges. The ride is much smoother in the stern cabins.

My take on this from my research
Rear Cabins - best at sea (unless motoring)
Front cabins - best in harbour
Centre cabins - best as store rooms in order to balance the weights easier!
