I have scanned a drawing I have made of the knot I use between 2 (or could be 3) anchor lines, if anyone is interested.

Not sure how to post here , so perhaps someone could point me in the right direction, or I could email it to anyone interested.

Moving off the hurricane bolt-holes onto an anchoring situation more to do with comfort () we'd be interested in the community's thoughts and experiences on this situation...

    - strong semi-diurnal tidal flows, so obviously changing direction every 6 hours

    - unexpectedly (!) exposed to wind on the beam

Is there a second anchoring technique (or a bridle adjustment?) to reduce the beam-on pounding by the swell (with enough fetch to make the vessel VERY rolly!) as the vessel's bow is gripped in the tidal flows?

If anyone's interested, we 'enjoyed' (NOT!) this unhappy combination off Moon Point, Fraser Island one night...and what was reportedly an idyllic anchorage turned into one very, very unpleasant evening. Happily the primary anchor (with heaps chain rode) held and there was no-one close by to be bothered with our swing, but is there a method to redirect the bow's angle?

If you would like the bow to point more to starboard, attach a line (maybe 1&1/2 or 2x boat length) to the anchor rode. Then run the line to a block on the port side aft then to a winch (or just use a cleat). Then slack the anchor rode or tighten the new line or a combination thereof. When the new line starts taking part of the pull the bow will move to starboard. Adjust until the boat is riding comfortably. Make sure anchor rode is still riding well at bow, may need different chafe gear, lead, etc. Some circumstances with cats may require anchor rode led from bow rather than central roller.
Line goes on starboard side to move bow to port etc.
Setting this up with multis can be a pain, but what's a good nights sleep worth?

Thanks much FSMike...and would that process be altered if the anchor rode is riding from a bridle?

The problem with multis is having a fair lead for the anchor rode so it doesn't chafe against anything. Monos are much simpler. In the case of no bridle, when leading the extra line down alongside the boat towards the aft quarter you have to be careful the rode isn't chafing at the roller or whatever point of attachment. Since this arrangement results in a sort of de facto bridle, I don't see any of the usual reasons for wanting a bridle off the bows applying. Even so, it seems to me that you could make this work with an existing bridle, but there would have to be some way of adjusting the length. And where would you attach the extra line? On the rode, or on one side of the bridle? That bridle would have to be long enough so everything could clear the bow.
As you can tell, I've never done this with a bridle.
I've only done it with tris, not cats. I've never experienced that aggravating a roll on a cat. On tris I've done it from the main hull, and also from the ama. The main hull seemed to be simpler.
In any case, it's not the sort of thing I would do if I was expecting conditions that were too windy. It's just that much more complication if you have to get moving in a hurry. Just for waves out of the wrong direction it works fine.

I have heard of adjusting the bridle to acheive the same effect. So, following your system, it might be something like shortening the port bridle lead to swing the bow to starboard?

    Anyone else try this?

Adjusting the bridle might work. Not sure if it would turn the bow enough without a lead to the aft quarter.

    Anybody?
