For temporary repairs I recommend "gaffers tape" instead of duct tape. Duct tape doesn't stand up well to the sun, and will get dry or gooey with time. Gaffers tape (although freaking expensive) holds up extremely well. I used it to wrap the padding on my convertible's roll bar and it showed no significant of deterioration after two years.

I have only used the black 3M 3910 gaffers tape. Other brands are cheaper and available in other colors, including reflective, but I don't know how well they hold up compared to 3M.

That said, white or reflective might be best for cruising use.
