Default Insurance company collecting taxes for states

Just a heads up to review your receipt from your insurance company.
We found that our insurance company has been collecting a tax based on instructions from our state of residency. Note that our boat is not registered in our state of residency nor is the boat located in that state. It appears that our state of residence has no justification for collection of this tax. Talking to the insurance company a number of states do require the insurance companies to collect tax and this may make sense for boats either registered or maintained in the state.
We are currently in contact with the state attempting to get a refund and a change in the state's guidance to the insurance companies.

    That doesn't sound good.

What state(s) are you referring to?

We are dealing with Kentucky and city of Louisville which tacked on tax with the state.

    Update:

After may months and numerous discussions with state's tax ombudsman the state finally agreed that we are not liable for premiums collected by the insurance company and paid to state or city. Now we'll see about a refund for the previous two years. One must be persistent and patient when working with governments.
