Also, the cheap "toys 'r' Us" flimsy buoy would not maintain enough of it's shape at depth to float the anchor! I am amazed at how everyone tries to make a better mouse trap! As stated before, we used these SS rings with empty propane cylinders 20+ years ago, before the strong commercial grade buoys were available. This video however, DOES demonstrate how to take off and avoid the anchor line, I'm always one to try to find the good in things Capt. Terry
Sorry Terry. It looked the same to me.

Any chance of this working under sail? I have been reading about this just today on some fishing sites, where it is referred to as the Alderney ring and buoy system (perhaps it originated on Alderney?).

I use my 9m Sagitta for fishing, and anchor in up to 50m water, with 200m line out. I don't have an engine or a windlass. So far, I have been using the sheet winches to pull in the anchor. They are good two-speed winches, so it is fairly easy, but it does take a while.

I think I will continue to walk forward with my remote in hand, and push the button. If that fails I will flop the chain over on to my second windlass, and push it's button to raise the anchor. If that fails I have 9 winches I can get line to.........i2f

Best price I seen anywhere else was about $142.00.
Only have black.
396 lbs. buoyancy ratings.

Let me know if you get them to come down on their price.
I ordered one.
Off topic a bit but I don't like ebay because of what I just saw again. I went to that site then to the anchoring section and found this. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-E...=p4506.c0.m245

Looks good for spare stuff for a hurricane but I went to the New England Rope site and could not find Hi Vee anywhere.

Now I am not much good at finding stuff but am again turned off!

Like I said, I get it.

I just am curious as to the angle at which it won't work.

Plus the chain thing.

Does not seem at all suitable for use as a mooring rope.

My personal favourite as anchor rope is an octoplait (8 Strand), beautiful flexible rope that is easy to coil, and does not knuckle. However, there is no doubt that the 3 strand nylon can be a lot more abrasion resistant - it is just a pig to coil down, and if you put a lot of stress on the rope , then quickly release it, strands can knuckle and severely compromise the strength.

I have seen a lot of angling charter boats use this method. As Talbot said, it means you don't have to retrieve it from the bow. They also anchor in a lot deeper water than the average sailing boat would!

Thanks again.

I just want some scraps to use in case of a hurricane. I will need a bunch of different lengths to use at the marina.

Brad,
After trying it, (and liking it!), please hop on here and blog about it! I feel like I'm the only one in the world with a secret! This bunch is very wary of strangers with candy! Except for tcm, of course, he'll be the first in line to buy a new bubble pump, London Bridge, roll of flight line, ST1, etc. I have an extra gallon of peppermint flavored bottom paint I might sell him! I don't think I could stand on deck and watch him try to sniff it underwater without being tied to the mast! Ouch my side hurts!Capt. Terry

Peppermint flavored bottom paint is a complete wast of money but if you have any peppermint flavored varnish then I'm in

I am not so sure.

There may be a fantastic opportunity here, to find a flavour that will send the fish wild and nibble all the bottom clean This may have been the fundamental error of those adding chilli powder to their mix, that this might work in an area fed on curry, but not in those areas more used to McDonalds.

Now we have changed topics to bottom paints! I have NEVER seen a barnacle attached to sand! Or a hot plate for that matter! How about a steel plated vessel with a current attached where you could heat it up to say 400 degrees every week or so and cook those little buggers off? Nothing sticks to teflon. Maybe they just haven't found a color that the barnacles don't like yet?

Except Barnacles. The glue Barnacles produce to glue themselves to things is so good that the likes of Du Pont are desperately trying to work out how to copy it. Dentists are especially interested in them - let's face it, once they've grown a bit the damn things can survive weeks at 20 knots plus in saltwater so false teeth shouldn't be much of a challenge. There's even been some studies looking at how to harvest the glue!!

I remember hearing David Bellamy telling me that the strongest, lightest structure you could have would be made from spider's webs and glued together with Barnacle's glue. Dunno if he was right though.

For anyone interested in buying a true heavy duty anchor float ring, I found this guy (Ron/sealark) who makes and sells one made of 3/8" stainless.
http://spearboard.com/showthread.php?p=994916
It is the strongest one I have found sold anywhere.
I spoke with him on the phone and ordered one using paypal for $48.00 shipped.
It includes the ring, rope and clip.
You can buy the ring alone for I think $25.00 plus shipping.
He admitted that he never used it with all chain but thinks it should work ok.
His email is sealark@cox.net

Did you ever get one and try it out?
Like Therapy, my concern would be if the anchor did not break free, there would be a major "snatch" if going 6 knots.

The idea still looks good, BUT;

I have the same 'snatching' concern.

Also, I still can't see how it would slide down chain.

Any current experience please.

I have not tried it, but I believe the 3/8" diameter ring I bought from "Sealark" would slide down chain.
I will try it next year and let you know my experience.
If it works well, I wont have to worry about adding an electric windla$$.
